How We Research

Updated on

Every guide on SwellSatchel starts with one question: will this product work for the person who is shopping for it? For our tool chest and rolling tool box guides, that means your garage, your tools and how you move them.

Here is how we answer it.

1. We start with your garage and your tools

How many tools you own, how much floor space you have and whether you move your tools around decide which chest or box fits. A drawer chest and a stackable system suit different jobs.

We check the outside size, the drawer count and the wheels. When your space limits the choice, we say what to measure.

2. We compare specs and features

We look at the outside size, drawer count and depth, casters, the top surface, latches and locks, and whether the body is steel or plastic. For modular boxes we note what is in the box and how the pieces stack.

Milwaukee, Craftsman, DeWalt, Keter and the other makers describe their products in their own words, so we name the brand for every claim. We quote the capacity and warranty the maker states and add no promises of our own.

3. We look at systems and sets

Names like Packout, VERSASTACK and ToughSystem cover several lines and sets. We name the exact set and say what it includes.

We don't say that one system fits or locks with another unless the maker says so.

4. We look at buyer feedback

We read through what buyers report after using a chest or box. We look for patterns, like wobbly casters, drawers that slide open, latches that stick, chipped paint or boxes that arrive damaged.

One angry review doesn't sink a product. A pattern does.

5. We score each product

Our score weighs specs, features and buyer feedback against what you're shopping for. A product that's great for one garage may score lower in a guide written for another.

Scores spread out on purpose. A 10 is rare.

6. We keep pages up to date

Products change, and some disappear from stores. Lines and set names overlap, so we check each model name and code, and we only link new units.

When we update a guide, the "Updated on" date at the top changes with it.

What our picks are not

Our picks are research, not lab tests. We don't claim to have loaded or used every chest we cover.

A loaded chest is heavy and can be top-heavy, so follow the maker's loading and moving instructions. We don't promise that any chest or box will hold a given weight or last for years.

Warranty terms are the maker's own words. When a maker makes a claim, we label it as the maker's claim.
